Elmo L. Meek was born on July
18, 1914 in Arkansas City, Kansas, the son of Wilbur Preston Meek and
Mabel Akin Meek. He attended Ark City public schools and
attended Arkansas City Junior College (now Cowley College) for two
years. He moved to Wichita and served as a mechanical
engineer at Boeing, and then at Murdock Machine and Engineering Co., of
which he became owner until his retirement.
While he was working at Boeing, Elmo obtained lodging as a boarder in
the home of a family named Craig in Wichita. Their daughter,
Margaret Dorothy, was attending Wichita University at the
time. Elmo began dating Margaret, and the two were married on
April 17, 1939. Margaret died on July 11, 1997, after 58 years
of marriage.
Elmo died Thursday, October 4, 2007 in his home in Wichita, at the age
of 93. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 pm Wednesday,
October 10 at the Downing & Lahey East Side Chapel, 6555 East
Central, in Wichita, Kansas. James T. Bartsch, Pastor of Flint Hills Community
Church of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, will conduct the
service. Burial will take place in a private, family service
Thursday, October 11, at 10:00 am at Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas
City, Kansas.
Elmo was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his sisters, Patricia
Winfrey and Mary Ellen Meek; and his brothers, Bill and Newell Meek.
His survivors include his son, Mark Alan Meek, of Tampa, Florida; his
daughters, Mary Margaret Magathan, of Cedar Point, Kansas, and Marcia
Lee Dew, of Denver, Colorado; his grandchildren, John William Davis and
Holly Marie Meek; and his great-grandchildren, Joshua Lee Davis,
Jessica Craig Davis, and Abigail Rae Davis. Memorials may be
given to Margaret Craig Meek Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, care of
